The National Ferries Company (NFC) will launch its second international ferry service from Khasab to Bandar Abbas in Iran on September 25. The company had started its international operations with a ferry to Qeshm Island in Iran on July 28.

H E Dr Ali bin Masoud bin Ali al Sunaidy, Minister of Commerce and Industry is expected to be onboard the inaugural ferry service and would be accompanied by other dignitaries as well as NFC officials. An NFC official told Muscat Daily that this would be an additional link for the ferry that plies between Khasab and Qeshm Island.

“To begin with, the ferry will go to Bandar Abbas via Qeshm Island. Operational plans can later on change depending on the load factor,” the official said. The frequency for both Qeshm and Bandar Abbas would be twice weekly – starting early in the morning on Thursdays and Saturdays from Khasab and returning the same day.

The official added that the ferry service to Qeshm has been running smoothly and a few hiccups, like delays in immigration check process at Qeshm, faced in the initial phase have been overcome. “Things have really improved and we are doing a turnaround time (from the time of arrival to departure) of 90 minutes.”

The company is hopeful that it will soon start taking vehicles onboard its ferry to Qeshm. “The work on the ramp at Bahman Port in Qeshm is in advanced stage. It is a matter of time when we start transporting vehicles along with passengers,” the official added.

Vehicle transportation to Bandar Abbas will also start as soon as the ramps are ready. People can travel visa free to the Qeshm Island while a visa is required for visit to Bandar Abbas. The journey from Khasab to Qeshm Island takes an hour and a half while it takes two hours to reach Bandar Abbas.
